High flying Birds…

October 25, 2011

The band are gearing up for a first time gig at the Monto Water Rats in Kings Cross on 3rd November. Tickets are £8.

There has been a lot of good music that has been released at the moment, I want to touch on the Kooks and Noel Gallagher’s new album.

I was lucky enough to go and see the Kooks last week at Brixton Academy. This was the tour that is show casing the bands new album “Junk of the Heart”. Although I did enjoy their last effort Konk, I did feel it was a step back from their debut “Inside in/Inside out”. The new album I think is brilliant. It starts very strongly with the title track and apart from a slight blip in the middle the album is consistent throughout . Stand out tracks are “Junk of the Heart”, “Eskimo Kiss”, and “How D’you Like that”. All three of these tracks were played particularly well live as well. The album seems to have given the energy back to the band which I feel was lost in the last album.

Although I was seated at the gig and so wasn’t up close and personal, it was nice to see the band had spent some money on the set. It was nice to see an attractive lighting show and well as a bit of thought to the set design. They played songs from all three of their albums, more so from the first and third, with only 3 songs played from their 2nd. It was nice to see an acoustic version of Tick of time included as well, which saw all the band stripped down to acoustic guitars. This was a bit of an unsung hero from the last album, so great to see it included in the set. All in all, a great gig. Luke Pritchard still bounds around making awkward movements but it works. And still good to see Hugh Harris wearing yet another quite bizarre suit.

Now on to Gallagher Snr. With 2 top 20 hits and his new album coming in at no 1, and with the country lapping him up at every interview he does, he must be over the moon. After, Liam’s pretty disastrous attempt at life after Oasis, what must he be wondering about his older brothers success?!

This album for me, is the best album of the year. Running closely in front of the Arctic Monkey’s new album, Noel’s for me comes in at the top. I know it’s not anything massively different to the music he has been writing over the last 18 years, but there is just a slightly more free and easy feel to all of the songs. Each song flows into one another and creates a real journey throughout. Liam has accused Noel of holding back some of these songs from the last few Oasis albums. This is something we will never know about, but does seem odd that these songs haven’t made it onto an Oasis album if they were around at the time. The highlight for me is the the whole first half of the album, each song going into each other. “Everybody’s on the Run” starts it off, and has claim to be one of the best on the album. The chanting chorus and the extension of each chorus works very well. “Dream on” is another classic Noel song, with “If I have a Gun” has a slightly Wonderwall/Cast No Shadow feel to them. Lyrically, see’s Noel touching on a softer side (potentially why he never asked Liam to sing on them!). The only thing I would say is that a couple of the songs do miss Liam’s voice and they would have made classic Oasis songs.

I have the pleasure of going to see Noel on Sunday evening, and I shall revert back when I’ve seen the new songs played live.

The Blues!!

October 16, 2011

So it’s been a rather long time since we’ve blogged, mainly because we’ve spent much of the summer doing ‘behind the scenes’ stuff that bands need to do – writing new material, rehearsing, recording – and the fruits of this labour is not far off. Come along to our November gigs to hear new music! (November 3rd @ Monto Water Rats, 25th November @ 229 Club, Great Portland Street).

I want to share my new musical discovery too – Stevie Ray Vaughan. Somehow this man passed me by before but been listening to him non stop – even started playing the guitar again because of him (will always be a drummer though – can’t really deal with these keys and sharp flat things). One of my favourites is this:

Not just for the comedy value of the choice of cover either – it’s just an awesome song.

Enjoy

We’re all going on a, summer holiday….

June 19, 2011

Good evening all,

I am sat on the Cornish coast on holiday. Not going to lie, it’s bliss!!

We played a cracking gig yesterday evening at the first festival we’ve had of the summer! Snodrox kicked it all off for us. It was a super set up and it was a great night. As a newby to the Snodrox festival we were given the semi difficult task of starting the night off. Thanks so much to all those who were there. Hopefully we will be playing there again next time! Thanks so much to Stephen Oxley for having us!

So from one festival to another festival….still on the warm up to Glastonbury!! SO excited!!

Not quite a veteran yet, but few years under, I’m going to leave you all with a few more of my Glastonbury favourites. So many big names hitting the fields of Pilton! Looking forward most to Coldplay but so many other bands that will make the festival!! Cider already pre bought, can’t go to Glastonbury without a flaggon or two!!

Next Sunday I will still be at the festival, so the next time you’ll hear from me is on the Monday.

Ben will also be at Glasto, so keep up with our twitter from Wednesday onwards to see how it’s going from the inside!

I’ll leave you with Mumford (voted best gig at Glasto last year by NME), the Courteeners and Blur..

Don’t sit down cos I’ve moved your chair…

The boys are back in town…..

June 12, 2011

Well hasn’t it been a little while….

So the band has been slightly inactive over the last few weeks.  This is for various reasons but also because Edvards has been home in Latvia for the last few weeks.  He’s back and so are we!!

Get ready to get excited! Gigs, studio time, photoshoots, new songs, festivals, radio play…..are just some of the things that will be happening in the world of The Phoenix Fall in the next few days, weeks, months….

We have our first festival appearance of the Summer next Saturday at Snodrox, a festival in Andover, Wiltshire.  For details on how to be there follow this link:

http://www.snodrox.com/

So with Glastonbury just around the corner and our first festival of the summer coming up, I thought I would leave you all with some of my favourite festival moments. Keep checking out website, follow us on twitter and keep reading these blogs!! I’ll be back this time next week.

Happy Sunday.

I wanted to give you two of my favourite videos of late. I’m sure you all know the songs as they were both number ones but some of you will have missed the videos.

Now, if you want to win tickets and a round of drinks at our next gig, we want you to upload a video of yourself doing the running man or the shuffle in tribute to the LMFAO tune. First one up wins two tickets and a round of drinks.

Last night

April 9, 2011

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who came down to last nights show in The Troubadour. Brilliant show, brilliant crowd. For those of you who arrived late in the evening I highly recommend you check out one of our support acts, Felix Fables. These guys put on a great show with fantastic songs, including a cover of Jungle Books ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ – bodies were dancing all over the place. Have a look for yourself.

It’s alright now….

April 6, 2011

Just a wee mid week note,

The Phoenix Fall start our residency at The Troubadour this Friday night, 8th April. Should be on stage at about 10pm doors from 7pm. Should be a great night with songs ranging back to the beginning of the band and also an exclusive play of the brand new single “It’s Killing Me”.

I am in the middle of reading Keith Ritchards autobiography, and I’m gripped. I’ve always been a Beatles man, and for some reason never really got into the Stones. But I’m learning as I go and I feel deprived not to have been listening to them before!

I’ll let them do the rest.
