The band are gearing up for a first time gig at the Monto Water Rats in Kings Cross on 3rd November. Tickets are £8.
There has been a lot of good music that has been released at the moment, I want to touch on the Kooks and Noel Gallagher’s new album.
I was lucky enough to go and see the Kooks last week at Brixton Academy. This was the tour that is show casing the bands new album “Junk of the Heart”. Although I did enjoy their last effort Konk, I did feel it was a step back from their debut “Inside in/Inside out”. The new album I think is brilliant. It starts very strongly with the title track and apart from a slight blip in the middle the album is consistent throughout . Stand out tracks are “Junk of the Heart”, “Eskimo Kiss”, and “How D’you Like that”. All three of these tracks were played particularly well live as well. The album seems to have given the energy back to the band which I feel was lost in the last album.
Although I was seated at the gig and so wasn’t up close and personal, it was nice to see the band had spent some money on the set. It was nice to see an attractive lighting show and well as a bit of thought to the set design. They played songs from all three of their albums, more so from the first and third, with only 3 songs played from their 2nd. It was nice to see an acoustic version of Tick of time included as well, which saw all the band stripped down to acoustic guitars. This was a bit of an unsung hero from the last album, so great to see it included in the set. All in all, a great gig. Luke Pritchard still bounds around making awkward movements but it works. And still good to see Hugh Harris wearing yet another quite bizarre suit.
Now on to Gallagher Snr. With 2 top 20 hits and his new album coming in at no 1, and with the country lapping him up at every interview he does, he must be over the moon. After, Liam’s pretty disastrous attempt at life after Oasis, what must he be wondering about his older brothers success?!
This album for me, is the best album of the year. Running closely in front of the Arctic Monkey’s new album, Noel’s for me comes in at the top. I know it’s not anything massively different to the music he has been writing over the last 18 years, but there is just a slightly more free and easy feel to all of the songs. Each song flows into one another and creates a real journey throughout. Liam has accused Noel of holding back some of these songs from the last few Oasis albums. This is something we will never know about, but does seem odd that these songs haven’t made it onto an Oasis album if they were around at the time. The highlight for me is the the whole first half of the album, each song going into each other. “Everybody’s on the Run” starts it off, and has claim to be one of the best on the album. The chanting chorus and the extension of each chorus works very well. “Dream on” is another classic Noel song, with “If I have a Gun” has a slightly Wonderwall/Cast No Shadow feel to them. Lyrically, see’s Noel touching on a softer side (potentially why he never asked Liam to sing on them!). The only thing I would say is that a couple of the songs do miss Liam’s voice and they would have made classic Oasis songs.
I have the pleasure of going to see Noel on Sunday evening, and I shall revert back when I’ve seen the new songs played live.
